"The acknowledged world authority on stringed instruments"
Peter Beare is the son of violin expert Charles and cellist Kate Beare. After graduating from the Violin Making School of America in 1988 he returned to Beare's, working as a restorer. In 1990 he went to spend a year in the Paris workshop of Etienne Vatelot and has subsequently also worked in Prague with Premysl and Jan Spidlen, and in Chicago with Carl Becker.
The 2004 BVMA International Violin Making Competition brought four awards for the violin entered by Peter Beare, including a first prize for sound. Currently Vice-President of the Entente Internationale des Maîtres Luthiers et Archetiers d'Art which he joined in 1997, Peter is also an examiner for the Newark School of Violin Making in Lincolnshire. He divides his time between Beare's in London and a workshop in rural Kent, where he makes original instruments and copies of old master instruments.
