Steven Smith - Director
Steven Smith, a director of Beare's since 1998, grew up with music and violins, since his father and uncle were dealers in fine instruments. After studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, he became a professional violinist, playing with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra and as soloist with the London Festival Orchestra. He was also a founding member of the acclaimed Smith Quartet.
He established his first violin business in 1985 and in 1994 he and his colleague Simon Morris founded Morris & Smith, which merged with J & A Beare in 1998. Having sold numerous great instruments and established a speciality in managing stringed-instrument portfolios, Steven advises many of the world's leading soloists, orchestras, foundations, banks and institutions on buying and selling fine Italian instruments.
