Remembering Charles Beare (1937–2025)

With the sad news of the passing of Charles Beare, the former Director of J & A Beare Ltd, we remember his life and enormous achievements in the world of fine string instruments, his lifelong passion.

Born in 1937, Charles  followed in the footsteps of his stepfather William Beare, owner of J & A Beare at the time, and studied violin making in the historic Mittenwald school from age 21. Keen for Charles to learn all aspects of the trade, William sent him to New York two years later, where Charles worked at the Rembert Wurlitzer firm.

There, Charles had access to many of the finest instruments passing through the United States at the time, with intense study of each example honing the skills that would serve as the foundation to his rise as one of the world’s central experts in the field. He took his knowledge of instruments and the trade back to England, assisting in the Beare’s family business and eventually becoming head of the company.

Beyond his great reputation for expertise, many of the leading musicians of the day were attracted to come to London for all their instrument needs. Milstein, Menuhin Yo-Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis, Norbert Brainin and Joshua bell to name just a few, who paid regular visits to our headquarters, first in Soho and then Marylebone. Charles’ close relationship with Jacqueline du Pré – who found her beloved Stradivari cello at Beare’s – meant that documentaries of her career were partly filmed at the company’s London home.

Charles Beare

Charles’ many achievements included the historic Stradivari exhibitions of 1987 in Cremona and 2013 at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum, which he  organised alongside his fellow directors at J&A Beare. During his long and illustrious professional life, he was honorary fellow of London’s Royal Academy of Music, for a time, president of the Entente Internationale des Maîtres Luthiers et Archetiers d’Art and also became honorary citizen of Cremona.

During the fourteen years we shared at Beare’s, Charles seemed to have an endless supply of entertaining anecdotes about the violin business and the myriad of characters that populated it.  Our weekly meetings to discuss instruments were always peppered with gems of knowledge which he was very happy to communicate to his colleagues.  And this opportunity, combined with the extraordinary quality of instruments we were privileged to see, has enabled J & A Beare to continue successfully to this day.

Charles’ memory and ability were extraordinary and his reputation for expertise was truly international. He always enjoyed his own ability to speak other languages and took great pleasure in speaking to clients in German, French or Italian.

The legacy he created was acknowledged through the awarding of an OBE in 2004 for services to the Music Industry.

Across his entire life, his primary focus was on the string instruments he loved – their craft, legacy, history, heritage, preservation and dedication to pass them on to future generations. He will be remembered as one the world’s finest experts on stringed musical instruments.

Our condolences and deepest sympathy to the family.
