Finding a Dream Instrument

We are delighted to share the news with you of a wonderful project: finding a dream cello for Harriet Krijgh, one of today’s most exciting and promising cellists and a member of the Artemis Quartet. Harriet has been looking for years for her ideal cello and J & A Beare has now been able to find for her a wonderful 1723 Domenico Montagnana cello that she is thrilled with. Thanks to the generosity of the Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung, she will now be able to play it on a long term loan.

For over 125 years, J & A Beare has had the privilege of stewarding the finest stringed instruments, from one generation to another, across cultures and centuries. It is our honour to work closely with musicians, leading cultural institutions, collectors and music lovers from around the world. This exceptional instrument is historically significant as it was owned and played by the British cellist, William Henry Squire (1871-1963) as well as the acclaimed Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk. We are thrilled that, thanks to Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung, it will be played by this gifted artist.

“I am grateful to J & A Beare for many years of friendship and for handling the sale.
This cello has an incredibly strong voice which carries in concert halls as well as a palette of colours which offers limitless possibilities to express one’s musical creativity.
I am very happy to know that an outstanding cellist is taking over this wonderful cello at around the same age as I was when I first started playing the Montagnana.”
– Truls Mørk

“I was elated to receive the news that this wonderful Montagnana cello would be loaned to me by Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung, organised by J & A Beare.

The cello was played by the wonderful Truls Mørk, a cellist I deeply admire. His performances and recordings have inspired me throughout my career and I feel honoured that I can now perform on the same instrument.

For the past year I have been fortunate enough to be the successor of Eckart Runge as cellist of the Artemis Quartet, which has been an enormous pleasure for me. Coincidentally, the Artemis Quartet released a recording of the Schubert Quintet in 2008 with Truls Mørk playing on the same Montagnana cello. It feels almost unbelievable that this cello is now with the Quartet again.

Thank you to Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung and especially to J & A Beare for making this possible.”

– Harriet Krijgh
