Managing Director

Steven Smith

Steven Smith is the Managing Director of J & A Beare – the world’s pre-eminent fine instrument dealer with a history dating back to 1892.

He has been passionate about instruments from an early age, both as a performer and collector, and became a director of J & A Beare in 1998.

The company was already world renowned for its expertise in fine antique Italian instruments but has since developed and expanded significantly. Today it focuses on the purchase, sale and certification of the world’s rarest and greatest instruments backed up by detailed research and a world-leading restoration team.

Steven has been directly involved in the majority of the finest instrument sales, including several world record-breaking deals such as six great instruments transacted for USD 42 million in 2011 – the size and scale being a first in the industry.

Clients include eminent musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Kyung Wha Chung, (see photo), Joshua Bell, (see photo), Nigel Kennedy, Zubin Mehta; institutional organisations and foundations comprise the Austrian National Bank, Dextra Musica and Nippon Music, Anne Sophie Mutter and Angelika Prokopp foundations amongst others, orchestras from around the globe include the Mariinsky Theatre, London Symphony Orchestra, Concertgebouw and Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as an extensive list of private collectors.

He also acts as expert and advisor to individuals and institutions in handling their instrument investments.

Since 1998, Steven has been instrumental in J & A Beare reaching major milestones, significant not just for the firm, but also within the industry. He has always been a strong advocate of philanthropy and education for the advancement of the arts. In 2011 he founded the Beare’s International Violin Society to support both established and young artists in developing their careers. To date it has facilitated over 160 instrument loans and recipients include Janine Jansen, (see photo), Vilde Frang, Vadim Repin, Kian Soltani, Pablo Ferrández, Quatour Ébène and the Dover Quartet.

With Steven at the helm, J & A Beare has developed numerous relationship with the Kronberg Academy, Herenchiemsee Festival and Beare’s Premiere Performances in Hong Kong. In 2016, the company purchased remarkable handwritten original records from celebrated violin dealers W. E. Hill & Sons. The records date back to 1880 and are a unique catalogue within the industry, detailing the purchase and sale history of thousands of the world’s finest instruments.  Along with Beares’ own database and access to the records of Rembert Wurlitzer Co. and other significant dealers, J & A Beare can draw for its research on a wealth of unmatched data which sets the company apart from any other leading dealer. In 2015, together with his then co-director Simon Morris, Steven set up Beares Publishing which, after more than five years of extensive research, is completing the most authoritative work on Stradivari instruments. The landmark collection, to be published in 2022, will comprise six volumes of detailed photos and provenance records, incorporating the most exhaustive study ever compiled of this maker’s work.

To coincide with the publication of the catalogue and working in collaboration with Janine Jansen, Sir Antonio Pappano and Decca Universal, Steven instigated and made possible the exceptional recording of twelve very fine Stradivari violins in one single CD.

At the same time, in association with award-winning director Gerry Fox, a documentary will be shown on Sky Arts in the UK and other international media outlets, covering the making of the documentary.  At Steven’s behest, the soon to be completed J & A Beare fine violin index, audited by KPMG and a first in this space, will demonstrate the attractiveness of fine instruments as an outperforming asset class using the company’s own proprietary data over many decades. J & A Beare’s scientific department will also become operative in 2021, demonstrating once again the approach to the research and study of fine antique string instruments. Steven is an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.

“What fascinates me is the history, the making schools behind these great instruments and the journey they have taken in order to reach us. The moments that really stand out for me are when we have uncovered surprises. For instance, a violin was brought into us covered in a thick heavy varnish; over several months we painstakingly removed it and beneath we found the varnish of a glorious Guarneri del Gesù!”

– Steven Smith
